Watch Out Federer...

My mom, a tennis nut, has relentlessly tried my entire life to get me to play tennis. When I was in first grade she put my hair in a ponytail because she said I looked like Jennifer Capriotti. When I was in third grade she bought me adorable tennis outfits to encourage me to like tennis lessons. Throughout high school and college whenever I had an injury or complaint about soccer or volleyball I would hear "you know, if you played tennis...." Even now, while watching Wimbeldon or another grand slam (I do enjoy watching these, likely from the inculcation that July 4th weekend means Wimbeldon finals as a child) she often wistfully thinks out loud, "with your height, you could have had a great serve..." The great dissapointment of my mother's life is that I never took up tennis.

This past weekend in Michigan there was a tennis court around the corner from the house which provided hours of entertainment for our family. One day I noticed a kid-sized tennis raquet by the front door, and by kid-sized, I mean for an 8 or 10 year old. Ever the optimist, my mom explained, "well, I just thought Sean could get used to the feeling of holding a raquet in his hand." Here you go, mom-- you can start the pro-tennis dream all over again for the new generation!:

P.S. Thanks to Paul and Gretchen and Sean's babyfriend Greta for the special birthday puppy-dog shoes, which combine two of Sean's favorite things to talk about: Wuf-Wufs and Sh-s.

All American Baby

Here is our proudly patriotic baby on July 4th during our recent trip to Pentwater, MI. We had a great time with my mom, Denise, Sandy, Mike, Eva and Gaia and a bunch of Denise's friends. 0% humidity, 70 degrees and sunny... what a welcome change from charleston this time of year.

Expanding Vocabulary

The other morning a sleepy and cuddly Sean laid with us and practiced his entire vocabulary:

Sean: Dad?
Cody: Yes?
Sean: Dad?
Cody: Yes?
Sean: Dad?
Cody: Yes?

Sean: Hat. Hat. Hat. Hat.

Sean: Baby. Baby. Baby. Baby.

Sean says Dad (more like "Dadt!!!") about 10,000 times a day, and he recently picked up the sign for it too, which is super cute. Still not even a hint of a "mom", "mama", "ma" ...nothing.

Happy Birthday Baby!

One year ago today Cody and I met our precious boy (outside the womb). Sean was scheduled for a C-section on July 3, but about 3:00 a.m. on July 2 I started having contractions and off we went to the hospital. I was strangely calm (mostly hungry) throughout the excitement. Cody, on the otherhand, usually cool as a cucumber, was the most rattled I have even seen! Not 4 hours after we went through who to call, what to say, where to go, he was frantically telling me he didn't know where the doctor's number was (right where we left it on the refridgerator) and asking "what T-shirt should I wear?" (!)

First bite of cake (ice cream to follow). He didn't quite know which end went in the mouth. it took a few tries to get it in there.

But once he got it in, don't come near his cupcake! Watch it, dad.

I love this picture! I think Sean's favorite part of his birthday was seeing all of his baby friends in one place. He could see and kiss them all as much as he wanted at his very own house! The thing I love the most about this picture though, is the baby all the way to the right, who made her appearance less than 24 hours after this picture! All of these beautiful babies in less than one year... we are certainly blessed :).
The Groebers 3 are off to Michigan for some more birthday and 4th celebrations! We'll be back in a few days, adios until then!
