Mom and Dad were up no less than 5 times with an angry baby last night. We "took his hands away" by putting hand socks on Sean last night before bed so he couldn't get to his thumb. Unfortunately, every time he realized he couldn't get to his thumb he let us know. One of us would go in, re-set the paci and stumble back to bed. finally, at 5:00 a.m., with one precious hour left to sleep, I gave in, hastily pulled of the socks and let Sean at his covetted thumbs. He was happy as can be when I went in an hour later.
Any ideas to help our thumb/paci/crying situation?

Sean is probably too young for this, but don't parents sometimes put something gross on their children's thumbs so they will lose their appeal? Soap, maybe?
Erin,
I love your blog. You do a fabulous job journaling about Sean. As for the thumbsucking. As a Great Aunt with privileges, I say let him have his thumb. Ask AA. She outgrew it. Can't wait to see you all again.

SO wonderful to see you all today! Sean is as precious in person as he appears on the web! Too cute!! As for the thumb-sucking, I think I agree with Auntie Karyn above. While its not great for his teeth, you can opt for orthodontia later on (you'll probably have to anyway!) In the meantime, he has his thumb ALWAYS and you never have to worry about remembering to bring it on outings. Binkies are so easy to lose! Good luck!
My kids turned out ok and I let them suck their thumbs if they wanted to. No lasting problems. I say the reason God gave little Seannie a couple of thumbs is precisely so that he will always be able to comfort himself. I think you should be thankful that he is able to comfort himself and put himself back to sleep if he has his thumb. When he gets to be about 3 and is still sucking, then you can paint his thumb with the stuff that tastes horrible and break him of the habit then! Love, Mama Peggy
